An encyclopedia entry for "typhoid fever" is presented. It is an infectious disease contracted by eating food or drinking water contaminated with the bacterium Salmonella typhi. Typhoid fever is otherwise known as enteric fever. Symptoms of typhoid fever include severe headache, fever, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. A blood test or obtaining a culture of typhoid bacteria from blood, faeces or urine will confirm diagnosis of typhoid.
