An encyclopedia entry for "Ancient Rome" is presented. Dreams have been viewed by Romans as divine messages and sought to use them as oracles. Romans were content to borrow from their more cultured neighbors, the Greeks. Dream incubation is the principal activity at the asclepieions, the temples established by the Romans to dedicate to Aesculapius. Philosopher Lucretius noted that many elements of dreams can be analyzed as the residues of daily experience.
