ABSTRACT
Knee, the joint in the middle of the human leg formed by the kneecap (also called the patella), the bottom end of the femur (the thighbone), and the top end of the tibia (the shinbone). The knee is the biggest and heaviest joint in the body and is classified as a hinge joint, one that allows movement in one plane only. At the bottom end of the femur, there are two knoblike projections, the femoral condyles. They fit into two crescent-shaped structures of cartilage (transparent, elastic tissue) atop the end of the tibia; these structures are called menisci, or semilunar cartilages. The menisci act as cushions to absorb shock.
