ABSTRACT
Tench, a Eurasian freshwater fish. The tench is a minnow that is usually found in ponds and quiet lakes and streams. It is a popular food and game fish in central Europe and has been introduced into some lakes of the United States. An adult tench ranges in length from 10 to 25 inches (25 to 64 cm) or more. Tench are usually green, shading to yellow around the belly; however, one variety, the golden tench, is amber-yellow with pale coral fins. The golden tench is a popular aquarium fish. In the winter, tench usually hibernate in mud burrows. They are also known to have the ability to survive for several weeks without water in the bottom of dried ponds or lakes.
