ABSTRACT
Snipe, a shore bird that lives in marshes, bogs, and meadows throughout most of the world. There are 15 species. The snipe's plumage is mottled and striped with brown, buff, and black, except for white underparts speckled with gray. Typical of the snipes is the common (or Wilson's) snipe of North America. It is about 11 inches (28 cm) in length. Snipes use their long, slender bills to probe in mud for worms; they also feed on insects, mollusks, and seeds. Before mating, the male snipe performs an unusual courtship flight. He soars high into the air, circles, and then dives towards the ground, with a loud buzzing noise produced by the air rushing through his wing and tail feathers.
