ABSTRACT
Ruff, a wading bird of Europe and Asia that sometimes strays along the Atlantic coast of North America. The male is speckled brown or chestnut above and white below; the female, which is called a reeve, is dull gray or brown above and buff below. The male is slightly larger than the reeve and grows to 11 inches (28 cm) long. During the breeding season, the male develops purplish-black eartufts and a ruff of feathers around the neck; the feathers are erected during the courtship dance. The reeve lays four grayish-green eggs with brown blotches in a nest on the ground. Ruffs eat insects, worms, and snails.
