ABSTRACT
Blowfly, a fly with a black head and thorax and metallic blue or green abdomen. It is 1/4 to 5/8 inch (6 to 16 mm) long and has bristles on its thorax and at the base of its wings. The females of most species lay their eggs on decayed meat or dead animals. However, the females of several species, such as the screwworm fly, lay their eggs in the wounds of warm-blooded animals. Screwworm.) The larvae, called maggots, hatch within 24 hours.
