ABSTRACT
Murre, a northern seabird. The murre is about 17 inches (43 cm) long. It has dark upper plumage, white underparts, and a pointed bill. The murre stands nearly erect. It is a skilled swimmer and diver and feeds chiefly on small fish and crustaceans. Murres nest in colonies, each female laying a single greenish or buff egg on a rocky ledge. The common murre breeds in the north Atlantic and Pacific, wintering as far south as the northern United States. Brnnich's murre (also called the thick-billed murre) winters as far south as Long Island.
