ABSTRACT
Gaur, a species of large, wild cattle of India, Burma, and southeastern Asia. The species reaches a much larger size than any other kind of cattle. A gaur has a deep, massive chest, dark-brown hair, and white feet. Its broad head has thick, upturned horns about two feet (60 cm) long. The bull, about six feet (1.8 m) high at the shoulders and more than nine feet (2.7 m) long, often weighs more than 2,000 pounds (900 kg); the cow is somewhat smaller. Gaurs live in small herds in hilly, wooded areas. They have never been domesticated. Once prized by big-game hunters, gaurs are now endangered and are protected by law.
