ABSTRACT
Kidneys, a pair of bean-shaped, glandular organs found in animals with backbones. Kidneys serve primarily to remove wastes from blood and to form urine, in which the wastes are excreted. About 1,700 quarts (1,600 l) of blood pass through a person's kidneys each day. If one kidney fails, the other can do the work of both.
