ABSTRACT
Indian Paintbrush, or Painted Cup, a large genus of annual, biennial, and perennial herbs. There are about 30 North American species. A common species, the scarlet paintbrush, is a hairy annual or biennial one to two feet (30 to 60 cm) high. The scarlet color of the flower spikes is due to the reddish bracts (petal-like leaves) that surround the small greenish flowers.
