Gaillardia, or Blanket-flower, a genus of hardy herbs native to western North America, but widely grown elsewhere. Various species are annual, biennial, or perennial. The annual is sometimes called Indian blanket or fire wheel. The plant has an erect, leafy, branching stem two to three feet (60 to 90 cm) high. The showy flowers, two to four inches (5 to 10 cm) across, have purple or yellow disks and red, yellow, or yellow-tipped red rays. Gaillardias produce an abundance of flowers from midsummer to late fall.
