Satcher, David (1938-) is an American physician. He served as the 16th surgeon general of the United States from February 1998 to February 2002. He also served as the assistant secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services from February 1998 to January 2001. Satcher was the first African-American man to serve as surgeon general. He urged people to help prevent disease by exercising, eating healthy foods, and avoiding cigarette smoking and drugs, and by immunizing children.
