Katz, Bernard (1911-), a German-born British physician, was renowned for his work on the physiology of the nervous system, particularly in relation to neurotransmitters, chemical compounds that relay nerve impulses or neural messages, from one neuron to another or from a neuron to some other bodily tissue. Katz shared the 1970 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine along with Julius Axelrod and Ulf Svante von Euler, for discoveries regarding the functions of humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals. Katz elucidated the functioning of the first known neurotransmitter, acetylcholine.
