ABSTRACT
A definition of the term "trophoblast" is presented. It refers to the outermost layer of the developing blastocyst of a mammal. It differentiates into two layers, the cytotrophoblast and syntrophoblast, the latter coming into intimate relationship with the uterine endometrium, with which it establishes nutrient relationships.
