ABSTRACT
A definition of the term "thalassemia," is presented. It means a group of hereditary anemias and people situated near the Mediterranean and in Southeast Asia are more prone to it. Defective production of the alpha or beta hemoglobin polypeptide chain or a lowered synthesis of the beta chain contribute towards producing anemia. Deficient alpha chain synthesis is responsible for causing a chronic hemolytic anemia which is also known as hemoglobin H disease.
