ABSTRACT
A definition of the medical term "temporomandibular joint syndrome" is presented. It refers to pain in and about the temporomandibular joint, which is made worse by chewing. Limited movement of the joint and clicking sounds during chewing indicates the syndrome. It is treated with bite blocks worn at night, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, local massage, or joint surgeries. Its synonym is Costen's syndrome.
