ABSTRACT
A definition of the term "superoxide" is presented. It refers to a reactive form of oxygen, which is produced during the normal catalytic function of certain enzymes, by the oxidation of hemoglobin to methemoglobin and when ionizing radiation passes through water. Phagocytization of bacteria by granulocytes also produces superoxide. The enzyme superoxide dismutase destroys superoxide.
