ABSTRACT
A definition of the term "shake test" is presented. It refers to a quick test used to estimate fetal lung maturity. In the test, a sample of amniotic fluid is first diluted with normal saline and mixed with 95% ethyl alcohol. Then it is shaken for 30 sec to detect the presence of pulmonary surfactant.
