ABSTRACT
A definition of the term "screening" is presented. It refers to the evaluation of patients for diseases such as cancer, heart disease, or substance abuse before they become clinically obvious. Screening has an important part in the early diagnosis and management of selected illnesses, which in some instances prolongs lives.
