ABSTRACT
A definition of the term "rheumatic fever" is presented. It refers to a multisystem, febrile inflammatory disease that is a delayed complication of untreated group A streptococcal pharyngitis. It is caused by an autoimmune response to bacterial antigens in the streptococci. Rheumatic fever may occur without any sign or symptom of joint involvement. To prevent recurrence of rheumatic fever, penicillin, erythromycin, or sulfa drugs are taken daily for at least 5 years.
