A definition of the term "random sample" is presented. It refers to a scrupulously unbiased selection of individuals or items from a population or other grouping in experimental medicine and epidemiology, in such a way that the study results will have a high probability of reflecting the variables under study, rather than unintentionally reflecting a characteristic of the research subjects.
