ABSTRACT
A definition of the term "prostacyclin" is presented. The term is used to refer to a derivative of prostaglandins, a group of hormonelike fatty acids found throughout the body that affects blood pressure and other important body processes. Prostacyclin form in the walls of blood vessels, prevent blood clots and usually dilate blood vessels.

The prostanoid pathway converts polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) into bioactive lipid mediators, including prostaglandins, thromboxanes and prostacyclins, all of which play vital roles in the immune and reproductive systems in most animal phyla. In crustaceans, PUFAs and prostaglandins have...

Abstract: Prostaglandin H synthase (PGHS) is an autocatalytic enzyme which plays a key role in the arachidonic acid metabolic pathway. PGHS mediates the formation of prostaglandin H2, the precursor for a number of prostaglandins which are important in a wide variety of biological processes,...

A definition of the term "prostanoids" is presented. This term is used to refer to prostaglandins and thromboxanes. These are the end products of the cyclooxygenase pathway of the metabolism of arachidonic acid. Prostaglandins and thromboxanes are obtained after metabolism of the above mentioned...

Prostaglandin production was measured in homogeneous cultures that had been characterized as glomerular epithelial and mesangial cells. Glomerular epithelial cells produced ten times more cyclooxygenase products than mesangial cells; 88 to 95% of its products were prostacyclin. Mesangial cells...
