ABSTRACT
A definition for the term "oxytocin challenge test" is presented. It refers to the intravenous infusion of 10 very small doses of oxytocin in order to determine whether contraction of the uterus in response to the oxytocin will cause signs of fetal distress. The test results provide a basis of making a decision concerning continuation of high-risk pregnancies. The criteria for interpreting the results are also discussed. The term is synonymous with contraction stress test.
