ABSTRACT
A definition of the medical term mediastinum is presented. The term refers to a septum or cavity between two principal portions of an organ. It also means the mass of organs and tissues separating the lungs. It contains the hear and its large vessels, trachea, esophagus, thymus, lymph nodes and connective tissue.
