ABSTRACT
A definition of the medical term "indoxyl" is presented. Indoxyl refers to C8H7NO, an oily substance which is sometimes found in the urine of apparently healthy individuals. It is formed from the decomposition of tryptophan by intestinal bacteria. The term originated from the Greek words "indikon" which means indigo, and "oxys" which means sharp. The definition is from the "Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary," published by F.A. Davis Co. The pronunciation of the term is also provided.
