ABSTRACT
A definition of the medical term "electrocautery" is presented. Electrocautery refers to cauterization that uses a variety of electrical modalities to create thermal energy, including a directly heated metallic applicator, or bipolar or monopolar electrodes. The term originated from the word "kauterion" which means branding iron. The definition is from the "Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary," published by F.A. Davis Co. The pronunciation of the term is also provided.
