ABSTRACT
A definition of the medical term "cautery" is presented. Cautery refers to a device used to destroy tissue by electricity, freezing, or corrosive chemicals. It is also used in potentially infected wounds and to destroy excess granulation tissue. The term derives from the word "kauter" which means a burner.
