ABSTRACT
A definition of the medical term "Ascomycetes" is presented. In one system of taxonomy, Ascomycetes refers to a class of the true fungi that includes the genera Histoplasma, Micosporum, Penicillium, and the yeast Saccharomyces. Ascomycetes is also equivalent to the phylum Ascomycotina in another system of taxonomy. The term originated from the words "askos" which means leather bag and "mykes" which means fungus.
