ABSTRACT
A definition for the medical term "ascites" is presented. It refers to the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. It is caused by interference in venous return as occurs in congestive heart failure, obstruction of flow in the vena cava or portal vein, or obstruction in lymphatic drainage. Care for patient with ascites is outlined
