ABSTRACT
The article presents a definition of the term EKPHRASIS. E. first appears in rhet. writings attributed to Dionysius of Halicarnassus (Rhetoric 10.17). Later it becomes a school exercise, where it is defined as "an expository speech which vividly (enargōs) brings the subject before our eyes" (Theon, 2d c. A.D.—Spengel). As a description of a work of art, ekphrasis has had a long and complex history.
