ABSTRACT
The article discusses the highlights of a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) round-table debate between leading human resources (HR) professionals from the north-west of England regarding the need for employers to find ways of engaging their staff. According to the participants, engagement is more critical in an economic downturn than in a boom. They also agreed on the need to keep communication channels with employees honest and open.
