The author describes the advantages of a four-engine arrangement for ferries and similar vessels. He explains that while the capital and operating expenditures for a four-engine installation and a two-engine installation are almost the same, a quad-engine arrangement increases a vessel's maneuverability by improving reaction time during acceleration and deceleration. In addition, he notes that engine repair and maintenance could be done more efficiently with a four-engine installation.
