In this article, the authors discuss the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) in the development of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). They note that DM and aging have morphological and functional consequences in the lung such as higher alveolar oxygen pressure (PAO2). They mention that the increased development of cavitation in diabetics and in older diabetic people leads to the assumptions that DM stimulates mechanisms or factors promoting cavitation of the lung parenchyma.
