ABSTRACT
The author stresses the benefit of reducing Escherichia coli (E coli) levels in the herds of British farmers. She notes that E coli O157, which infected 13 children who visited Godstone Farm in Surrey, England, first appeared in 1977. She mentions that cases of Verotoxigeneic E coli (VTEC) O157 infection in children brought up on farms are rare. She advises farmers in high-incidence areas to consider the VTEC O157 status of their herd in order to protect their own and the visitors' children.
