The author comments on the importance of discussing societal issues in science class. He discusses the need for students to understand scientific concepts, develop critical thinking and analyze claims made in popular media. He also cites the link between scientific inquiry and social issues and describes how science educators can assist students make informed decisions based on scientific evidence, ethical principles and logical reasoning.
