The author discusses the lack of Black Canadian children's and young adult (YA) literature that are written by Black authors. Topics covered include how Black Canadian high school students identify with books such as "Harriet's Daughter" by Marlene Nourbese Philip and "The Coldest Winter Ever" by Sister Souljah, the author's establishment of the group African-Canadian Writers for Children and Young Adults, and the emergence of self-published Black Canadian writers such as Angela Ndongmo.
