ABSTRACT
This article presents criticism of Charles W. Chesnutt's 1899 volume of short stories "The Conjure Woman." It features exploitation by whites of the natural landscape and former slaves after the Civil War. The collection also highlights African American traditions of magical spirituality, which placed slaves in a close relationship to the natural world.
