ABSTRACT
A literary criticism of the use of allegory in poems by Randall Jarrell is presented. It includes "The Woman at the Washington Zoo," "The Bronze David of Donatello," and "The Tree." The tradition of allegory in American literature is examined, and the author's assertion that allegory is also a useful form of literary criticism is explored.
