ABSTRACT
This article discusses the minimal role of women in picaresque literature, referencing the novel "Lazarillo de Tormes" as a reflection of the attitude towards women in 16th century Spain. The theme of effeminacy in the picaresque novel is discussed, along with its implications of discrimination towards minorities in Spain, reflecting social conditions at the time. An examination of María de Zayas and her commentary on the unfair treatment of women in her own picaresque novel, is also discussed.
