ABSTRACT
The article explores the effect of removing the female character Hedda Gabler from the theatrical stage and placing her in a different theatrical milieu by examining the 1994 production of Henrik Ibsen' s play "Hedda Gabler," by the Oslo Nye Dukketeatret or puppet theater in Oslo, Norway. The author suggested that replacing the body of the female actress with a puppet demonstrated how a concept of essential womanhood is actually a mere set of repetitive bodily and verbal acts.
