ABSTRACT
The article argues that the fairy tale "Tyrannie des fées détruit," by Madame d'Auneuil, helped 18th-century readers embrace technology by shrouding it in the tradition and nostalgia of a fairy tale. The tale "normalizes industrial expansion" by constructing a supernatural creation myth that supplants the otherworldly (fairies) with the mechanical (the hydraulic river pump constructed under Louis XIV).
