ABSTRACT
This article critically appraises the book "Five Centuries of Music in Venice," by H. C. Robbins Landon and John Julius Norwich. This book is designed as an accompaniment to the Channel Four television series "Maestro: A Musical Journey Through Venice." The present reviewer has not seen the series and has therefore had to treat the book on its own merits; a pretty slender affair it is. It is undoubtedly beautiful to behold: the illus- trations are magnificent, but there are far too many and the text is smothered by them. Fewer and more carefully selected plates would have made a more effective contribution to the usefulness of the whole.
