ABSTRACT
The article focuses on literature in North Africa, and the impact which the French language had on it. A comprehensive analysis of the literary criticism that has been applied to North African writing deserves a full-length study, for during the past few years alone, publications on the subject have proliferated enormously. The criticism that emerged in the 1970s with Abdelkebir Khatibi's work is first and foremost taxonomic, for it seeks to define the unique character of the North African text in terms of a socio-cultural thematic matrix from which the act of writing remains completely absent. The seminal works by Kbatibi has spawned numerous imitators who appropriate their predecessors' classifications, linking francophone North African literature to an historical process of decolonization, from which they deduce a summary and repetitive set of themes.
