ABSTRACT
The article presents a study which is aimed to describe and compare the prevalence patterns of completed suicide and so-called 'attempted suicide' or parasuicide in Edinburgh, Scotland during 1970. All suspicious deaths including accidents were investigated to detect cases of completed suicide. Results indicated that hospitalized parasuicides in Edinburgh were representative of all parasuicides detected, parasuicide and suicide are distinct and have different causes, suicide and parasuicide rates varied with area of residence, and that the two are related.
