ABSTRACT
The article presents a prospective survey of parasuicides known to general practitioners in Edinburgh, Scotland. The survey was carried to supplement previous intensive research based on admissions to the Regional Poisoning Treatment Centre at the Royal Infirmary in the city. Its major aim was to identify to what extent findings in this hospital-treated population are contaminated by factors influencing referral, as well as to examine whether aetiological explanations of this behavior and endeavors in prevention has been misled by hospital studies. Findings of the study which demonstrates that the problems defining this behavior for operational use of the general practitioners can be overcome are posted.
