This article presents an interview of David Yeske, a financial planner and principal of Yeske & Co., concerning his term as the president of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) in the U.S. for 2003. Before becoming a financial planner, Yeske was a brokerage consultant for a disability income insurance company at the Pacific Stock Exchange. In that position, he called on insurance brokers, stockbrokers and financial planners. What he discovered, over time, was that the financial planners he was calling on was doing exactly the kind of work that he wanted to do so he planned for a career change. He earned his Certified Financial Planner mark and started his own financial planning firm. Over his 13 years in the business, Yeske's practice has changed in two ways. First, his commitment to and focus on comprehensive financial planning has grown. Second, he has realized the value of subject area experts in financial planning. As incoming president of the FPA, Yeske plans to focus on establishing financial planning as a distinct and unique discipline, one that is different from asset management or giving legal advice. His other goals for FPA relate to his belief that the profession has evolved and advanced through a bottom-up process.
