ABSTRACT
An interview with Evan Thomas, author of the book "War Lovers: Roosevelt, Lodge, Hearst, and the Rush to Empire, 1898," is presented. When asked about how the U.S. got into pro-war frenzy, he says it started with efforts to rescue Cuba from Spanish oppression and the idea that America was overcivilized and soft. Thomas believes that Roosevelt and statesman Henry Cabot Lodge are imperialists. He also mentions the contribution of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst in the pro-war propaganda with sensationalist yellow journalism.
