ABSTRACT
The article presents an interview with Shiro Hiruta, president of Japanese chemicals company Asahi Kasei, about its expansion overseas. Hiruta names some of the challenges faced by the firm, including high feedstock costs and uncertain prospects for global economic growth. He acknowledges that an effective way for Japan's ethylene plants to compete on the global scale is through technological innovation. Hiruta refuses to provide details of potential acquisitions.
