ABSTRACT
This article presents an interview with Alex Savich, manager of Individual Investor Group of T. Rowe Price Associates Inc. on investment management strategies. In response to a query related to view of the investors on the daily market swoons of 300 points, he said that whenever there's a sharp move in the market, one has people who make permanent or temporary changes in their investment strategies. Predictably, there are those investors who will want to go to a more conservative strategy in times of market volatility. But, on the whole, the impact since summer's downturn hasn't been profound, given the extent of the change in the market. In response to another query related to the profile of the self-directed investor, he said that estimates range from 30% to 70% of the market is self-directed rather than adviser-oriented because people generally are not one or the other. They might invest on their own most of the time and then work through an adviser when dealing with a very complicated decision. There are shades of self-directeds, and it's really a psychographic split from the advice-dependent audience, which tends to skew older and have more assets.
